Skill-Level Guide for Native Hands Courses

Native Hands courses are designed for adults. However, 16-18 year olds are welcome if accompanied by a participating, responsible adult.
Many Native Hands courses are suitable for beginners, but some aren’t. You’ll see this indicated in the description on each course page.
But also…

To help you choose courses that are right for you, here’s a simple skill-level guide

Wild Basketry
Making baskets is a physical process, so reasonable hand strength and dexterity is required for all courses

– Complete beginner? I recommend: Grass Baskets, Pine Needle Baskets, Wild Cordage
– New to basketry but used to making things with your hands? I recommend all of the above as well as: Rush Foraging Baskets, Looped Rush Bags, Bark Trugs, Rush & Wild Rose, Bramble & Rose
– Some basketry experience / quietly confident as a maker? I recommend all of the above as well as: Bramble Baskets, Nettle Net Bags, Reed Mace, Ivy Baskets, Grass Foraging Baskets (details on this one coming soon)
– Experienced? I recommend all of the above, depending on your area of interest

Wild Pottery
 – Suitable for everyone

However, if you’re a studio potter hoping to learn from the course how to make your studio practice more sustainable, Wild Pottery may not be a good fit for you. Some elements of what you’ll learn will be transferable to the studio, but Ruby doesn’t teach about studio techniques. The focus of these courses is on wild clay and open firings.

Fire-Making
– Suitable for everyone
