Description

Coiled wild grass, hazel handle, thick hemp twine.

Fragrant as a hayfield, this basket comes straight from the land, from fields and woods. It has beautiful textures in the natural materials and is highly tactile.

In high summer, I gather wild grasses from the corner of a favourite Sussex field. Dried and stored in the studio, I later coil the grass with hemp twine into a vessel form, using a special tool, a bone fid. Coiling (lip work) is an ancient technique; a slow, methodical process. In the winter months I cut hazel cut sustainably from the woods and form it into a handle. Once set, it’s attached to the basket. I make offerings before cutting grass and hazel: a gesture of reciprocity.
