An immersive day in the woods weaving a reed mace (bulrush) basket, starting with harvesting the plant. The beautiful texture and subtle colours of these baskets make them a gorgeous addition to your home.

Venue Open air woodland setting in a 70 acre ancient woodland on a family-run working farm: peaceful and beautiful Dernwood Farm Nr Heathfield, East Sussex.
These baskets are perfect for storage, for holding a large plant pot or as a bathroom bin. We’ll be round a cosy camp fire in the autumnal woods for this day of weaving reed mace.

What you’ll learn
How to ID reed mace, Typha latifolia (often known as bulrush), where to find it and its ecology.
We’ll cut some on the day, and you’ll learn how to select, harvest and prep it for weaving.
You’ll learn how to do the attractive ‘fitch’ weave, as well as a few other weaving techniques on your basket, plus a secure border.
Guided by Ruby through all the stages, you’ll leave knowing how to make a reed mace basket from living plant to finished item.
Who is this for
This course is for you if you have previous experience of basketmaking.
If you’ve previously woven with English rush, it’s ideal for increasing your knowledge of different weave patterns.
Not suitable for beginners.

What’s included
A simple but hearty and delicious organic vegetarian lunch is provided, cooked on the camp fire. We’ll also have have a kettle on the fire, with teas, biscuits and fresh fruit available all day.
I aim to offer you a satisfying learning experience as well as an enjoyable time away from it all.
To support you in getting the most from the day, we’ll connect to the woodland surroundings through a short and simple, guided mindfulness-based practice.

Accommodation: camping is available at the farm venue and details will be sent to you when you book. The farm also has glamping options- cosy bell tents and cabins with wood-burners. The cost of staying at the farm isn’t included in the cost of the course. Read about accommodation options.
