Plaited Reed Mace (bulrush) Bags

reed mace bag

26/27 June 2021 (Sat/Sun)

Starts 2pm Saturday, ends 5pm Sunday

£165

Venue: ancient coppiced  woodland on a family-run working  farm: peaceful and beautiful Dernwood Farm Nr Heathfield, East Sussex.

Make a beautifully textured cross-body bag from plaited reed mace, Typha latifolia, (often known as bulrush). Learn how to make a 5 element plait and then stitch it together to form a bag. You’ll add a strap to make it a perfect bag for carrying your essentials.

Reed mace is a lovely material to work with, it’s easy on the hands, and it mellows to a soft golden colour.

We’ll cut some of the materials on the day from the site, and you’ll learn how to harvest, store and process this easily available and useful basketry plant.

Beginners are welcome (you’ll find it helpful if you can already confidently make a 3 strand plait), and for those with some previous experience it’s a great opportunity to expand your existing skills. If you’ve previously worked with rush, you can develop your knowledge with this easily-foraged plant that is similar to weave with. Groups are kept small to allow for individual attention.

I aim to offer you a satisfying learning experience as well as an enjoyable time away from it all. To support you in getting the most from the days, we’ll connect to the woodland surroundings through a short and simple, guided mindfulness-based practice.

This is the second workshop I’ve done with Ruby – what a wonderfully gifted teacher. So much care is taken – from making fire, to foraging the plants, and imparting valuable knowledge in such a clear and kind way. And weaving is glorious, it’s so satisfying. What an amazing way to learn basketmaking. I can’t wait to make one by myself now! Julia, Devon
